ATV and UTV Cover Guide: Sizing, Storage and Trailering

By the GEARS team Updated November 2026 7 min read
Quick answer

To pick the right ATV cover, measure your quad's length, width and height with its windshield, rack boxes and passenger seat in place, and compare those numbers to the cover's dimensions. Then decide how you will use it: a trailerable ATV cover is built to stay on at highway speed, while a UTV storage cover protects a side by side parked at home but is not made for towing. Our Trailerable ATV Cover fits most large ATVs, and the ArmorX UTV Cover comes in a 2-seat and a 4-seat size. Here is how to measure, which one fits, and how to store or trailer with it.

Step 1: measure your ATV or UTV

Measure the machine as you will cover it. If you run a windshield, a rear cargo box or a 2-up seat, leave them on: they are what usually decides the fit.

  • Length: in a straight line from the front of the front rack or bumper to the back of the rear rack, box or bumper.
  • Width: at the widest point, usually across the tires or the fenders. On an ATV, check the front and the rear, since many are wider at one end.
  • Height: from the ground to the highest point, usually the top of the windshield, mirrors or a rear box. On a UTV, measure to the top of the roll cage or roof.

Write the numbers down with your make, model and year before you shop.

Which ATV cover fits your quad

Fully stretched over an ATV, the Trailerable ATV Cover measures 240 cm long (about 94 inches), 160 cm wide at the front (about 63 inches), 146 cm wide at the rear (about 57 inches) and 120 cm high (about 47 inches). If your ATV, with its accessories, comes in under those numbers, it should fit. The product page names big ATVs such as the Honda Rincon, Polaris Sportsman 600 and Yamaha Grizzly 700, and lists these lines as compatible:

  • Can-Am Outlander and adult Renegade
  • Honda Rancher, Foreman and Rubicon
  • Kawasaki Brute Force
  • Yamaha Grizzly and Kodiak
  • Arctic Cat Alterra
  • Polaris Sportsman
  • Suzuki KingQuad

The size guide on the product page shows more examples, and it is not a complete list. Owners have told us it fits a 2015 Honda Rancher 420 with a windshield and a 2-up seat, a 2024 Honda Rubicon (covered to the bottom of the tires), a Yamaha 550, a CFMOTO 1000, machines carrying rear cargo boxes (one of them extra-large), and a 2-seat quad.

This cover is cut for large ATVs. On a small or youth quad, compare your measurements carefully, since it will sit loose.

ATV cover with a windshield

A windshield is the part most covers rub. Ours has a zip-out windshield and fairing pocket lined with soft material, so the shield is not scratched or scuffed in storage or on the trailer. When you have no windshield, the pocket tucks under the cover out of the way. Owners mention the soft lining often in their reviews. If your windshield stands well above the bars, include it in your height measurement.

Which UTV cover fits your side by side

The ArmorX UTV Cover fits most 2-seat and 4-seat sport and utility UTVs up to 72 inches wide. Pick the size by your seats, then check the fitting guide (the second image on the product page):

  • 2UP (360 cm, about 142 inches long): for example the Can-Am Commander, Defender, Maverick Sport and Trail, and Maverick X3; Honda Pioneer 500, 700 and 1000 and Talon 1000X and R; Kawasaki Mule, Teryx and KRX 1000; Polaris General, Ranger, RS1 and 2-seat RZR models; Yamaha Viking, Wolverine and YXZ1000.
  • 4UP (about 400 cm, or 158 inches long): for example the Can-Am Commander Max, Defender Pro and Max, and Maverick Sport Max; Honda Talon 1000X-4; Polaris General 4 1000, Ranger Crew and 4-seat RZR XP models; Yamaha Viking VI.

Those are examples, not a complete list. One exception is named on the page: the ArmorX does not fit the 4-door Can-Am Maverick X3 Max. The fitting guide tells you which size to order before you buy.

Storage or trailering: choose before you buy

This is the question that matters most, because a storage cover on a trailer at highway speed can flap, wear through or come off.

  • Trailering an ATV: the Trailerable ATV Cover is built for it. The elastic hem pulls it snug around the wheels, and the separate 12-foot strap wraps around the cover for extra security, so it stays put at highway speed.
  • Storing an ATV: the same cover works indoors or outdoors year-round, against rain, snow, dust, wind, debris and UV.
  • Storing a UTV: the ArmorX is made for storage. Its heat-taped seams keep water out, the UV-protected fabric helps reduce paint fading, and the BreezeTech vents let air move under the cover to reduce condensation. The driver's side zipper lets you reach inside without pulling the whole cover off.
  • Trailering a UTV: the ArmorX page says it is not suitable for high-speed trailering, so do not tow with it on.

Before you cover any machine for the season, let the engine and exhaust cool fully, and wash and dry it so you are not trapping mud and moisture underneath. If it will sit for months, a maintainer keeps the battery healthy: see our battery maintainer winter storage guide.

Tips for trailering an ATV with a cover

  1. Tie the ATV down first. The cover protects the machine. Your ratchet straps or wheel straps hold it to the trailer.
  2. Pull the hem down snug around all four wheels, so the elastic grips low and leaves wind less room to get under the cover.
  3. Use the 12-foot strap every time. Wrap it around the cover and snug it down, without cranking it so hard it strains the seams.
  4. Check it at your first stop and retighten anything that has loosened. One owner had a strap give out on a first highway trip while the main strap held, so this check matters most on the first run.
From our riders

An owner who carries an extra-large box on the back of his ATV uses wheel straps to hold the machine down, which also keeps the cover sitting neatly, and he reports no trouble at highway speed.

Which cover should you buy?

  • Large ATV that goes on a trailer: the Trailerable ATV Cover.
  • Large ATV parked outside for the winter: the same cover. It is made for year-round storage, indoors or out.
  • 2-seat side by side kept at home: the ArmorX UTV Cover, 2UP.
  • 4-seat side by side kept at home: the ArmorX UTV Cover, 4UP (not for the Maverick X3 Max).

You can see every option in our ATV and UTV covers collection. If you are getting ready for the trail rather than for storage, our ATV protective gear checklist covers what to wear, and our comparison of an ATV cab enclosure vs handlebar muffs covers riding in the cold.

Questions riders ask us

Will the ATV cover fit with a rear cargo box or a 2-up seat?

On a large ATV, usually yes. Owners have fitted it over rear cargo boxes and 2-up seats, and we have recommended it for a Yamaha Kodiak 450 with a box seat and a 2025 Grizzly 700 with a back seat. Measure the length and height with the box on and compare them to the dimensions above.

Which ATV cover fits a Honda?

The Trailerable ATV Cover lists the Honda Rancher, Foreman and Rubicon, and the product page names the Rincon. Owners have fitted it on a Rancher 420 and a 2024 Rubicon.

Can I trailer my side by side with the ArmorX cover on?

No. The ArmorX UTV Cover is made for storage, and its product page says it is not suitable for high-speed trailering.

Will the ArmorX fit my Can-Am Maverick X3 Max?

No. The 4-door Maverick X3 Max is the one model the page says it does not fit. The 2-seat Maverick X3 takes the 2UP size.

Can I leave my ATV covered outside all winter?

Yes. The Trailerable ATV Cover is made for year-round storage indoors or outdoors, and one owner reports it has come through rain and 80 km/h winds. Brush heavy snow off rather than letting it pile up.

Is the ATV cover hard to put on?

It is a heavy-duty cover, and owners note it is on the heavy side and takes a little effort to handle. Start at the front, settle the hem around the front wheels, then pull it back over the seat and rack.
