5 Ways to Improve Your Motorcycle Riding Skills

5 Ways to Improve Your Motorcycle Riding Skills

Whether you’re a novice or advanced rider (or somewhere in between), improving your riding skills can help you out on the road and keep you safe on your adventures! Challenging yourself to improve and get outside of your comfort zone can make you a better rider overall, and can come in handy if you ever run into a tricky situation. Read on to learn 5 ways to improve your skills:

Brake Properly

Learning to brake properly while riding a motorcycle takes some practice. Instead of coming to abrupt stops, just like in a car you need to brake slower and longer. Doing so will give you more control and will allow you to stop without losing any tracking or causing damage to your wheels. Plus, if you’re already slowing down it will prepare you for any emergency or sudden stops you need to complete at a light or corner.

Adjust your Speed at Corners

Even though it may be tempting to lean into a curve and take it at a faster speed, it’s always best to go into it slowly and then accelerate as you come out of it. You will have more control when trying to adjust your motorcycle speed and limit your chances of wiping out. Taking a corner too quickly will result in you panicking and having to make some quick adjustments.

Ride Within your Means

Riding is a great community activity, and builds lifelong friendships. Whether you’re just starting out or have been on two wheels for a while now, you always want to stay within your comfort zone. If you’re riding with people who are more experienced or just like to go a bit faster in general - let them know the pace you’ll be going beforehand & set a meeting spot if they want to go ahead.

Be Aware of Target Fixation

The old saying that you end up riding or veering in the direction of what you’re looking at rings true. Target fixation can be pretty dangerous, especially if you’re focusing on an object that is heading your way on the road like a rock or piece of debris. Instead, focus your vision away from the object (as tempting as it may be to look) and your bike will magically follow your lead.

Know your Motorcycle

Motorcycle Maintenance is an important part of caring for your bike and ties into becoming a better rider overall. Knowing the different parts of your bike, how they work, and how to take care of them or maintain them will make you a better rider down the road. If you’re a beginner, maybe seek advice from a friend on bike parts and anything related to fixing it. Start small and work your way up. Learning to do something as small as an oil change can be rewarding.
