Snowmobile on a forest trail with a GEARS tunnel bag and shovel packed behind the seat

Snowmobile Luggage Guide: Tunnel Bag vs Saddlebags vs Handlebar Bag

By the GEARS team Updated November 2026 6 min read
Quick answer

A snowmobile tunnel bag mounts on the tunnel behind the seat and carries a day's worth of gear, with room for a shovel on top. Saddlebags hang beside the seat and suit long-track sleds and, with the right pair, two-up riding, and a handlebar bag keeps your phone, keys and gloves within reach. Here is how the three compare, what fits your sled, and how to choose.

What is a tunnel bag?

The tunnel is the long, flat structure under the seat that runs to the back of the snowmobile and covers the track. A tunnel bag straps onto the rear of it, behind the seat, which keeps the weight low and centred on the sled.

Our Universal Snowmobile Tunnel Bag is built for exactly that spot:

  • Four compartments. An expandable main compartment for bulky gear, a slim top pocket for gloves, and a side pocket at each end for water bottles, snacks or tools.
  • Shovel carrier. Two straps with quick-release buckles hold a shovel head on top, and hook-and-loop straps hold the handle on the side.
  • Size. 42 cm long and 25 cm wide (16.5 x 10 in), expanding from 24 to 32 cm tall (9.5 to 12.5 in).
  • Snowproof. Highly water-resistant fabric and covered zippers keep wet snow out, and the fabric stays flexible in sub-zero temperatures.
  • Mounting. A four-point cam buckle system lets you install it lengthwise or crosswise, and an anti-slip, anti-scratch base protects your sled. It is designed to fit all snowmobiles, including those with the Ski-Doo LinQ system, though one LinQ owner mounted it with rivets and anchors instead, so check the space behind your seat before you order.
  • Glove-friendly. Oversized zipper pulls and a rubber carry handle.

Owners have fitted it on a 2010 Arctic Cat Sno Pro 500 with a 128-inch tunnel and a 2019 Polaris Indy XC 129. One Polaris owner bolted the clips into the tunnel slots with T-slot bolts for a fixed install.

Ride a 2008 to 2016 Ski-Doo on the REV-XP or REV-XR chassis? The REV XP/XR Snowmobile Tunnel Bag is shaped for that chassis, with a tool-free cam buckle install and reflective beading on the rear. It does not fit the REV-XU, REV-XM or REV-XS.

Snowmobile saddlebags

Saddlebags come as a pair and hang on either side of the rear seat. They suit long-track sleds, where there is more room along the sides, and two-up sleds, where a tunnel bag would take the passenger's space. On a two-up sled, check that the bags leave the passenger's seat, handholds and footrests clear once installed.

  • Trail Boss Universal Fit Snowmobile Saddlebags: made for Yamaha, Arctic Cat, Ski-Doo and Polaris snowmobiles. Heavy-duty 1200-denier UV-treated polyester with a mildew-resistant coating, covered zippers with large pull tabs, a main compartment plus a pocket on each side, and reflective trim. They do not get in the way of the rear passenger's legs, and extra-long rear straps fit long-track sleds. Each bag is 16 x 6.5 x 13.5 in (41 x 17 x 34 cm).
  • Vintage Snowmobile Saddlebags: an adjustable webbing system for a wide range of sleds, long-track included, with a main compartment, two side pockets, covered zippers and reflective strips. Each bag is 14.5 x 11.5 x 7.5 in (37 x 29 x 19 cm).

Take a few minutes to get the straps right on the first install. One Vintage owner found the straps needed tightening often, so check them before you ride and at your stops.

From our riders

One rider compared the Trail Boss with the Yamaha-branded saddlebags on a friend's sled: those took up a third of the seat and foot area, while the Trail Boss bags left both clear.

Handlebar bags

A handlebar bag holds what you reach for at every stop. Pick by how much you carry:

  • Small Handlebar Bag: 9.5 x 5 x 4.5 in, like a fanny pack for your handlebars. It fits all ATV and snowmobile handlebars, installs without tools, and has a key ring holder inside so your keys stay put.
  • Big Handlebar Bag: 12 x 5.5 x 7.5 in, with a main pocket, a front pocket, waterproof zippers and a stowaway map pouch.

Both have reflective beading and long zipper pulls you can use with gloves on. Owners use them for a phone, wallet and documents, or goggles with spare lenses. Check the size against your bars before you order: riders who expected a large bag found these closer to a fanny pack.

Which snowmobile luggage do you need?

  • You ride solo on day trips: a tunnel bag, with a shovel on top.
  • You ride two-up: the Trail Boss saddlebags, which do not get in the way of the passenger's legs.
  • You ride a long-track sled or do multi-day trips: saddlebags, or saddlebags plus a handlebar bag.
  • You just want your phone and keys handy: a handlebar bag, on its own or with either of the above.

Packing tips for a day on the trail

  1. Keep heavy items low and the load balanced. Water, food and tools go at the bottom of the bags, split evenly between saddlebags, and within your sled's load limits.
  2. Carry the mechanical basics. A shovel, a tow strap, a basic tool kit, a spare drive belt and a first aid kit.
  3. And the emergency basics. Extra food and water, a light, a way to start a fire, a map or GPS, and a way to call for help if you are stuck overnight.
  4. Pack a dry layer. Spare gloves, a toque and a dry base layer make a long day a lot more comfortable.
  5. Keep your phone warm. Batteries drain fast in the cold, so carry your phone in an inside pocket or an insulated pouch rather than an outside one.
  6. Check your straps at the first stop of the day and after rough sections of trail.

Questions riders ask us

Will the Universal Tunnel Bag fit my sled?

It is designed to fit all snowmobiles, including those with Ski-Doo LinQ, and it measures 42 x 25 cm with a height of 24 to 32 cm. On some LinQ setups owners have used the rivets and anchors instead of the LinQ mount. If you are unsure, send us your make, model, year and tunnel length through the chat and we will check. You can also look up your sled in our Ski-Doo cover and bag fit guide or Polaris cover and bag fit guide.

Can I ride two-up with saddlebags?

With the Trail Boss saddlebags, yes: they hang beside the rear seat and do not get in the way of the passenger's legs. Check the passenger's handholds and footrests once they are installed.

Do your saddlebags fit long-track snowmobiles?

Yes. Both the Trail Boss and the Vintage saddlebags have extra-long rear straps for long-track sleds.

A buckle broke. Can I get a replacement?

Yes. The replacement quick-release buckles fit our Trail Boss and Vintage saddlebags, and the cam buckle replacement fits the Universal and REV XP/XR tunnel bags, so a broken clip does not mean a new bag.
